E whakamānawa ana
Ki ngā ringa i whakatipu
Ki ngā ringa i whakarite
I ēnei haupa
Hei kai mā tātou
Haumi ē, hui ē, tāiki ē
This karakia talks of acknowledging those who had a hand in growing and/or preparing the kai for us to eat.
Simple. Meaningful. Relevant.
For a while I found the word ‘karakia’ a bit intimidating - I wanted to be respectful, I didn’t want to mess it up, and I wanted the words to be meaningful to me. Then I heard someone describe one of the functions of karakia to be that of marking transitions and bringing intentionality - and I really liked that explanation.
With that in mind… We offer you this karakia for kai as means to bring a moment of mindfulness before the feasting commences.
Design and reo by Reo Māori Mai, printed in Ōtautahi, Christchurch.
Available in 2 sizes: A5 and A4.
A translation is included on the reverse of each karakia purchased.
